The goal of human life is to attain God and to get freedom from the cycle of birth and death. Sages have told many means of penance, yoga, chanting etc. for this. Narmada Maa is the real grace of Lord Shiva. Since ancient years, gods and goddesses and saints have done penance on both its banks. All the pilgrimages on the north and south banks of Narmada are Tapobhoomi.

Narmada Parikrama is a penance. There is no adventure journey or safe place, at the time of circumambulation one has to face many difficulties at every step. Parikrama of Narmada is an invaluable opportunity to shape the life of a seeker and a powerful means of God realization. Reverend Shri Rang Avdhoot Maharaj used to say many times that “If there is no faith in God and still want to see God, then with full curiosity and devotion, Go on a circumambulation of the Narmada."

Parikrama is a part of the worship and also indicates the end of the ritual. Prasad is given after parikrama in almost all the temples after performing aarti and praise-worship. The sins of many births are destroyed by circumambulation.

Parikrama and its types:-

The act of going round and round around the one we have to circumambulate by keeping it towards our right hand is called Parikrama or Pradakshina. Pradakshina should be done slowly while chanting the name of God. Parikrama done in a calm manner with meditation and contemplation of God is a kind of spiritual practice. Parikrama is done in many ways, by walking, while doing obeisances and by vehicle. Out of all these, the circumambulation done by walking barefoot is considered the best. Because in this, all the pilgrimages, confluences of both the banks of Narmadaji are visited and there is an opportunity to bathe, visit and worship.

In the Parikrama by vehicle, only the main main pilgrimages are seen. People like old, sick and disabled people who cannot do parikrama on foot can use vehicles.

Generally, Parikramawasi walk along the banks of the Narmada falls. Many waterfalls and small and big rivers have to be crossed on the way. It climbs up and down the hills too. Maa Narmada herself takes care of the descent of the devotees dependent on her. Even then, the seekers should walk carefully by avoiding thorns, wet swamps and rivers and streams. The journey to Lakkadkot forest and Shoolpani jhadi is considered difficult. The true test and austerity is to walk barefoot without using any vehicle to complete the circumambulation.

Normally the circumambulation can be started from any place on the Narmada coast. The circumambulation is completed by going round the entire stream keeping the Narmada straight on the hand and coming back to the place from where the circumambulation was started. If the original flow of Narmada is violated, then the circumambulation is considered broken. There is no fault in the violation of canals or pipelines taken out of Narmada.
